If a landlord wants to evict a tenant based on overdue rent, that requires days of notice—and clear information on the tenant’s obligations, rights, and options. Under current Washington State landlord-tenant law, renters can have as little as three days to catch up on rent before eviction.


The 14-day timeline is meant to give tenants more time to come up with a plan. In addition to setting an new timeline, the bill would standardize a notice to vacate that, among other things, needs to lay out what’s required of the tenant, including total amount due broken down by type of charge. For month-to-month renters, except in specific circumstances, a landlord can end tenancy with just days of notice—unless the apartment building is going condo or if the landlord wants to change policies around children.
