Movement qualities

What are the qualities of movement? Is Expressionism a modern art movement? Who influenced the Expressionist movement? Divide into two groups. Half will dance, half will be the audience.

One member of the audience will call out a dynamic quality. The dancers will move. Exchange roles until everyone has improvised movement phrases in each quality, quickly changing qualities as they are called out. Where does movement quality start?


I find it’s best to start at one end of the body and move to the other. Here is a great website that shows what baseline movement quality is. If you cannot hit these standards, I would address them now before they become a bigger issue.

It can take a little bit of time but once you become practiced at it, it takes no time at all. Swinging These movements sway, shift and are pendulum like. Suspended These movements are pulle hovering or hanging. Collapsing These movements are often falling, relaxe faint, flopping or a release. Percussive These movements are sudden, chopping, jagged and sharp. If you are giong to move you need to know where you are going so you evolve a more complex body plan.


Movement is a real driving force of evolution.

How to use movement in a sentence. In a broader sense Expressionism is one of the main currents of art in the later 19th and the 20th centuries, and its qualities of highly subjective, personal, spontaneous self-expression are typical of a wide range of modern artists and art movements. Impressionism is a 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. Impressionism originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to. Now I realize every trainer and coach out there (myself included) will tell you they focus on “ movement quality ” in their sessions.


Create a movement study that reflects the entire experience. Remember to use body shape, floor patterns, and movement patterns through space. Think about how your wire sculpture may be translated through movement with energy, space, and time.


In dance, movement qualities are deļ¬ned as the manner in which movement is executed. They relate to the qualitative characteristics made manifest in movement. However, none of these systems articulates movement expressive. All students in a group will combine their individual movements to create the entire working tool.


Debrief As a group, discuss the tools that were explored and the movement qualities associated with each. Use sounds if desired. This work is not just technical but spends time teaching the students to recognise and act upon creative impulse in the body. Many watchmaking concerns, however (and especially many micro-brands), rely instead upon a small number of tried-and-true movements from several companies whose specialty is in producing movements themselves, rather than complete watches.
